I’ve looked at clouds from both sides now

Africa – One cat to rule them all

Last night in my sleep, I sang the lyrics for “Both Sides Now” and so now I have been thinking about the song.  It’s a sweet acoustic song, and you can listen by clicking here.

But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way

Both Sides Now” is a song that is sweet, and intriguing and I don’t know what meaning Joni Mitchell had in mind.  I have a theory though.

I’ve looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow
It’s cloud’s illusions I recall
I really don’t know clouds at all

Someone is welcome to correct me but the clouds in the song may be a metaphor for life.  Clouds are always changing, and evolving.  Clouds can be light and white, or dark and threatening.

Life is constantly changing like those clouds,  nothing remains the same and, as I am reminded often, it’s always sunny up above the clouds!  Those blue skies are hope, peace and light.

Thank you for reading, and visiting. – David

And you can dissipate clouds if you don’t like them. 🙂 Beautiful photos.

Hi Lorrie, I like your comment about clouds. In most cases if you are distracted a few minutes, the clouds you were looking at are either gone or unrecognizable! Thanks for commenting, the cat belongs to my daughter.

  2. I always thought the clouds represent life’s problems, too.

    Sweet kitty. 🙂

  3. That was one of the songs I learned to play on the piano when I was a kid – one of the few that I could do well. It’s a great metaphor for life.

    Love this Joni Mitchell song!
TBPH, I think the lyrics mean something slightly different to everyone, so you keep doing you over there!
Your kitty as a cutie, and the photos are gorgeous!

My husband apparently dreamt I was cooking hotdogs for a bunch of people and asking, “would you like fries with that.” He then proceeded to get up at 4am, deciding he was hungry, and went downstairs & ate two of the oatmeal raisin cookies I baked yesterday. Your dream sounds way more whimsical 😂

  9. It’s one of my favorite songs and for some reason I was thinking about it this week too. And yes, I think you’re right, it’s a metaphor for life. The older we get, the more we realize how much we really don’t know and understand. And so it goes…

  10. Love this post so much Dave! Ms. Mitchell is a poet and musician extraordinaire and I do love that you blogged about this song that I have loved most of my life. I think the clouds are a metaphor for life and how our childhood “illusions” about life can be shattered as we grow up. The Circle Game is another great song with a similar message. My sister recently sent me Joni’s book, Morning Glory on the Vine, a collection of songs, poems and paintings she did as a young women. A great gift for the Joni fans in your life.
