Standing Out or Outstanding!

Some people see more in a walk around the block than others see in a trip around the world.-source unknown

This was an week where my health affected me so I could not walk very well and missed going to work. It has been much worse at other times but mostly I was restricted this week.  Fortunately my work will wait, and I did get some medications later this week and thankfully am feeling better and am again mobile.

I want to share what happened on Tuesday because it stood out in my mind as special.  As I sat in the hospital on Tuesday morning waiting my turn for a blood test I heard a boisterous, friendly, welcoming voice ring out ” Hey Buddy!”

It wasn’t for me. It was for a thin man who was driving a small red motorized cart, he had an orange flag on it so I suspect he uses it to go everywhere (it’s a small town). The voice of welcome, and the smile that shone out with it was from …. the cleaning lady.  She was outstanding in her friendship to this gentlemen.

I could almost see her welcoming voice settling down around him like a blanket and then she followed it up with chatting and more talk. I gathered from the crumbs of conversation that I overheard that she hadn’t seen him around the hospital for awhile, and he has been a frequent guest.

I was touched by her warmth to this man who she likely befriended during one of his visits.   She stood out to me because of her character, and I admired her.

As a person who is known on sight at hospital laboratory, and pharmacy I have frequently appreciated the people like this special lady who bring more to what they do.  I am convinced this gifting this woman gave to this gentleman was just part of her character and that is a generous giver of encouragement, friendship, and smiles.

The reason I love this city is because of the people like this lady who I have never spoken to.   I like to believe this is a special place with angels walking amongst us; fanciful certainly but it makes me smile.

Those who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves. ~James Matthew Barrie

She spread smiles and warmth that cleaning lady;  and it inspired me.

Oh yes, this week has been full of inspiration. I heard Philip Yancey on the radio. I had to figure out who it was because all I heard was about an accident where he nearly died ,and was close to death possibly. He realized everything on his mind boiled down to just three things. He said they were:

  1. the people he loves
  2. what did he achieve in his life
  3. what happens next (afterlife).

I think we all realize if we were lying on a bed with a broken neck; then our entire perspective would be different. We wouldn’t any longer  be worried about what car we drove, or how much was in our bank account. We would only be thinking about seeing the ones we love, and possibly wishing we had done things a bit differently.  Maybe thinking about #3.

You likely have thought these things yourself.  You have looked around you at the persons who love you, the friends you visit you when you are sick, and appreciated them silently.

Perhaps you are like me and sometimes think about your life.  Trips you still like to take, places you would like to see, people I want to show more appreciation to,  walks and evening breezes you want to experience.  I think it is called “taking stock”, always a healthy action.

I encourage myself and you to be retrospective sometimes. Count your blessings and then start something.  What can you do different? What is holding you back from making your life a little bit better, that you will look back on in 12 months and say – it was a small change but it added up to something really special, encouraging, and outstanding.

This blog is one of those things. I wanted to try something, make it fun but make it meaningful.

If you like my blog. I am pleased and glad. If you recommend it, or subscribe then I am honored. Thank you for your encouragement.
